OnecaptainthatIsailedwithwasnotachipbetterthantheonewe’rewithnow.Hewastradingwithafriendlychiefonedayaboardhisvessel.Thechiefhadswamofftouswiththethingsfortradetiedatopofhishead,forthemchapsarelikeottersinthewater.Well,thechiefwashardonthecaptain,andwouldnotpartwithsomeo’histhings.Whentheirbargainin’wasovertheyshookhands,andthechiefjumpedoverboardtoswimashore;butbeforehegotfortyyardsfromtheship,thecaptainseizedamusketandshothimdead.Hethenhoveupanchorandputtosea,andaswesailedalongtheshorehedroppedsixblackfellowswithhisrifle,remarkin’that‘thatwouldspoilthetradeforthenext-comers.’But,asIwassayin’,I’muptothewayso’thesefellows.Oneo’thelawso’thecountryisthateveryshipwreckedpersonwhohappenstobecastashore,behedeadoralive,isdoomedtoberoastedandeaten.Therewasasmalltradin’schoonerwreckedoffoneoftheseislandswhenwewerelyin’thereinharbourduringastorm.Thecrewwaslost—allbutthreemen,whoswamashore.Themomenttheylanded,theywereseizedbythenativesandcarriedupintothewoods.Weknewprettywellwhattheirfatewouldbe;butwecouldnothelpthem,forourcrewwassmall,andifwehadgoneashoretheywouldlikelyhavekilledusall.Weneversawthethreemenagain.
