Onedaywewerebecalmedamongagroupofsmallislands,mostofwhichappearedtobeuninhabited.Aswewereinwantoffreshwater,thecaptainsenttheboatashoretobringoffacaskortwo.Butweweremistakeninthinkingtherewerenonatives;forscarcelyhadwedrawnneartotheshorewhenabandofnakedblacksrushedoutofthebushandassembledonthebeach,brandishingtheirclubsandspearsinathreateningmanner.Ourmenwerewellarmed,butrefrainedfromshowinganysignsofhostility,androwednearerinordertoconversewiththenatives;andInowfoundthatmorethanoneofthecrewcouldimperfectlyspeakdialectsofthelanguagepeculiartotheSouthSeaIslanders.Whenwithinfortyyardsoftheshoreweceasedrowing,andthefirstmatestooduptoaddressthemultitude;butinsteadofansweringus,theyrepliedwithashowerofstones,someofwhichcutthemenseverely.Instantlyourmusketswerelevelled,andavolleywasabouttobefiredwhenthecaptainhailedusinaloudvoicefromtheschooner,whichlaynotmorethanfiveorsixhundredyardsofftheshore.
"Don’tfire!"heshoutedangrily."Pullofftothepointaheadofyou!"
Themenlookedsurprisedatthisorder,anduttereddeepcursesastheypreparedtoobey;fortheirwrathwasroused,andtheyburnedforrevenge.Threeorfourofthemhesitated,andseemeddisposedtomutiny.
