BloodyBill,asthemeninvariablycalledhim,wasstandingatthetiller;buthispostforthepresentwasasinecure,andhewhiledawaythetimebyalternatelygazingindreamyabstractionatthecompassinthebinnacleandbywalkingtothetaffrailinordertospitintothesea.InoneoftheseturnshecameneartowhereIwasstanding,andleaningovertheside,lookedlongandearnestlydownintothebluewave.

"Bill,whyisitthatyouaresogloomy?Whydoyouneverspeaktoanyone?"
Billsmiledslightlyashereplied,"Why,Is’poseit’sbecauseIhain’tgotnothin’tosay!"
"That’sstrange,"saidImusingly."Youlooklikeamanthatcouldthink,andsuchmencanusuallyspeak."
