Seatedonacamp-stoolatthetable,andbusilyengagedinexaminingachartofthePacific,wasthecaptain,wholookedupasIentered,andinaquietvoicebademebeseated,whilehethrewdownhispencil,andrisingfromthetable,stretchedhimselfonasofaattheupperendofthecabin.
"Boy,"saidhe,lookingmefullintheface,"whatisyourname?"
"RalphRover,"Ireplied.
"Wheredidyoucomefrom,andhowcameyoutobeonthatisland?Howmanycompanionshadyouonit?Answerme,now,andmindyoutellnolies."
"Inevertelllies,"saidIfirmly.
Thecaptainreceivedthisreplywithacold,sarcasticsmile,andbademeanswerhisquestions.
Ithentoldhimthehistoryofmyselfandmycompanionsfromthetimewesailedtillthedayofhisvisittotheisland—takingcare,however,tomakenomentionoftheDiamondCave.AfterIhadconcluded,hewassilentforafewminutes;thenlookingup,hesaid,"Boy,Ibelieveyou."
Iwassurprisedatthisremark,forIcouldnotimaginewhyheshouldnotbelieveme.However,Imadenoreply.
"Andwhat,"continuedthecaptain,"makesyouthinkthatthisschoonerisapirate?"
"Theblackflag,"saidI,"showedmewhatyouare;andifanyfurtherproofwerewanting,IhavehaditinthebrutaltreatmentIhavereceivedatyourhands."
ThecaptainfrownedasIspoke;but,subduinghisanger,hecontinued,"Boy,youaretoobold.Iadmitthatwetreatedyouroughly,butthatwasbecauseyoumadeuslosetimeandgaveusagooddealoftrouble.
