Therewasnothinglumberingorunseemlyaboutthevessel,excepting,perhaps,aboat,whichlayonthedeckwithitskeelupbetweentheforeandmainmasts.Itseemeddisproportionatelylargefortheschooner;butwhenIsawthatthecrewamountedtobetweenthirtyandfortymen,Iconcludedthatthisboatwasheldinreserveincaseofanyaccidentcompellingthecrewtodesertthevessel.
AsIhavebeforesaid,thecostumesofthemenweresimilartothatofthecaptain.Butinhead-geartheydiffered,notonlyfromhim,butfromeachother—somewearingtheordinarystrawhatofthemerchantservice,whileothersworeclothcapsandredworstednightcaps.Iobservedthatalltheirarmsweresentbelow,thecaptainonlyretaininghiscutlassandasinglepistolinthefoldsofhisshawl.Althoughthecaptainwasthetallestandmostpowerfulmanintheship,hedidnotstrikinglyexcelmanyofhismeninthisrespect;andtheonlydifferencethatanordinaryobserverwouldhavenoticedwasacertaindegreeofopencandour,straightforwarddaring,inthebold,ferociousexpressionofhisface,whichrenderedhimlessrepulsivethanhislow-browedassociates,butdidnotbyanymeansinducethebeliefthathewasahero.Thislookwas,however,theindicationofthatspiritwhichgavehimthepreeminenceamongthecrewofdesperadoeswhocalledhimcaptain.
