Wealsosawagreatnumberofflying-fish,althoughwecaughtnone;andwenoticedthattheyneverflewoutofthewaterexceptwhenfollowedbytheirbitterfoethedolphin,fromwhomtheythusendeavouredtoescape.Butofallthefishthatwesaw,nonesurprisedussomuchasthosethatweusedtofindinshallowpoolsafterashowerofrain;andthisnotonaccountoftheirappearance,fortheywereordinary-lookingandverysmall,butonaccountoftheirhavingdescendedinashowerofrain!Wecouldaccountfortheminnootherway,becausethepoolsinwhichwefoundthesefishwerequitedrybeforetheshower,andatsomedistanceabovehigh-watermark.Jack,however,suggestedacausewhichseemedtomeveryprobable.Weusedoftentoseewaterspoutsinthesea.Awaterspoutisawhirlingbodyofwater,whichrisesfromthesealikeasharp-pointedpillar.Afterrisingagoodway,itismetbyalongtongue,whichcomesdownfromtheclouds;andwhenthetwohavejoined,theylooksomethinglikeanhour-glass.Thewaterspoutisthencarriedbythewind—sometimesgently,sometimeswithviolence—overthesea,sometimesupintotheclouds;andthen,burstingasunder,itdescendsinadeluge.Thisoftenhappensoverthelandaswellasoverthesea;anditsometimesdoesmuchdamage,butfrequentlyitpassesgentlyaway.Now,Jackthoughtthatthelittlefishmightperhapshavebeencarriedupinawaterspout,andsosentdownagaininashowerofrain.Butwecouldnotbecertainastothispoint,yetwethoughtitlikely
