           NowPeterkin,beingunabletoholdback,creptashortwayupaverysteepgrassymoundinordertogetabetterviewofthehogsbeforetheycameup;andjustasheraisedhisheadaboveitssummit,twolittlepigs,whichhadoutruntheircompanions,rushedoverthetopwiththeutmostprecipitation.OneofthesebrushedclosepastPeterkin’sear;theother,unabletoarrestitsheadlongflight,went,asPeterkinhimselfafterwardsexpressedit,‘bash’intohisarmswithasuddensqueal,whichwascausedmorebytheforceoftheblowthanthewilloftheanimal,andbothofthemrolledviolentlydowntothefootofthemound.Nosoonerwasthisreachedthanthelittlepigrecovereditsfeet,tossedupitstail,andfledshriekingfromthespot.ButIslungalargestoneafterit,which,beingfortunatelywellaimed,hititbehindtheearandfelledittotheearth.

           "Capital,Ralph!that’syoursort!"criedPeterkin,who,tomysurpriseandgreatrelief,hadrisentohisfeetapparentlyunhurt,thoughmuchdishevelled.Herushedfranticallytowardsthegorge,whichtheyellsofthehogstoldustheywerenowapproaching.IhadmadeupmymindthatIwouldabstainfromkillinganother,as,ifPeterkinshouldbesuccessful,twoweremorethansufficientforourwantsatthepresenttime.Suddenlytheyallburstforthtwoorthreelittleroundonesinadvance,andanenormousoldsowwithadroveofhogsatherheels.

           "Now,Peterkin,"saidI,"there’sanicelittlefatone;justspearit."

           ButPeterkindidnotmove;heallowedittopassunharmed.
