"Now,lads,"saidJackwhenwewerecomposedenoughtolistentohim,"yongreenobjectisnotashark;itisastreamoflightissuingfromacaveintherocks.JustafterImademydive,Iobservedthatthislightcamefromthesideoftherockabovewhichwearenowsitting;soIstruckoutforit,andsawanopeningintosomeplaceorotherthatappearedtobeluminouswithin.ForoneinstantIpausedtothinkwhetherIoughttoventure.ThenImadeupmymindanddashedintoit;foryousee,Peterkin,althoughItakesometimetotellthis,ithappenedinthespaceofafewseconds,sothatIknewIhadwindenoughinmetoservetobringmeouto’theholeanduptothesurfaceagain.Well,Iwasjustonthepointofturning—forIbegantofeelalittleuncomfortableinsuchaplace—whenitseemedtomeasiftherewasafaintlightrightaboveme.Idartedupwards,andfoundmyheadoutofwater.Thisrelievedmegreatly,forInowfeltthatIcouldtakeinairenoughtoenablemetoreturnthewayIcame.ThenitallatonceoccurredtomethatImightnotbeabletofindthewayoutagain;butonglancingdownwards,mymindwasputquiteatrestbyseeingthegreenlightbelowmestreamingintothecave,justlikethelightthatwehadseenstreamingoutofit,onlywhatInowsawwasmuchbrighter.
