Suddenlyhesankbelowit,andvanishedaltogetherfromoursight!Wegazedanxiouslydownatthespotwherehehaddisappearedfornearlyaminute,expectingeverymomenttoseehimriseagainforbreath;butfullyaminutepassedandstillhedidnotreappear.Twominutespassed!andthenafloodofalarmrushedinuponmysoulwhenIconsideredthat,duringallmyacquaintancewithhim,Jackhadneverstayedunderwatermorethanaminuteatatime—indeed,seldomsolong.
"OhPeterkin!"Isaidinavoicethattrembledwithincreasinganxiety,"somethinghashappened.Itismorethanthreeminutesnow."ButPeterkindidnotanswer;andIobservedthathewasgazingdownintothewaterwithalookofintensefearmingledwithanxiety,whilehisfacewasoverspreadwithadeadlypaleness.Suddenlyhesprangtohisfeetandrushedaboutinafranticstate,wringinghishands,andexclaiming,"OhJack!Jack!Heisgone!Itmusthavebeenashark,andheisgoneforever!"
ForthenextfiveminutesIknownotwhatIdid;theintensityofmyfeelingsalmostbereftmeofmysenses.ButIwasrecalledtomyselfbyPeterkinseizingmebytheshouldersandstaringwildlyintomyface,whileheexclaimed,"Ralph!Ralph!perhapshehasonlyfainted!Diveforhim,Ralph!"
Itseemedstrangethatthisdidnotoccurtomesooner.InamomentIrushedtotheedgeoftherocks,andwithoutwaitingtothrowoffmygarments,wasonthepointtospringintothewaveswhenIobservedsomethingblackrisingupthroughthegreenobject.
