Thislumpcontinuedtoincreaseinsizeuntilitappearedlikeabunchofcrab’slegs;and,indeed,suchitprovedinaveryfewminutestobe,forthepointsofthetoeswereatlengthextricatedfromtheholeinitsback,thelegsspreadout,thebodyfollowed,andthecrabwalkedawayquiteentire,eventothepointsofitsnipper-claws,leavingaperfectlyentireshellbehindit,sothat,whenwelooked,itseemedasthoughthereweretwocompletecrabsinsteadofone.
"Well,"exclaimedPeterkin,drawingalongbreath,"I’veheardofamanjumpingoutofhisskinandsittingdowninhisskeletoninordertocoolhimself,butIneverexpectedtoseeacrabdoit!"
Wewere,intruth,muchamazedatthisspectacle,andthemoresowhenweobservedthatthenewcrabwaslargerthanthecrabthatitcameoutof.Itwasalsoquitesoft,butbynextmorningitsskinhadhardenedintoagoodshell.Wecamethustoknowthatcrabsgrowinthisway,andnotbythegrowingoftheirshells,aswehadalwaysthoughtbeforewesawthiswonderfuloperation.
NowIconsideredwelltheadvicewhichJackhadgivenmeaboutpreparingmytank,andthemoreIthoughtofitthemoreIcametoregarditasverysoundandworthyofbeingactedon.SoIforthwithputhisplaninexecution,andfoundittoanswerexcellentlywell—indeed,muchbeyondmyexpectation;forIfoundthatafteralittleexperiencehadtaughtmetheproperproportionofseaweedandanimalstoputintoacertainamountofwater,thetankneedednofurtherattendance.
