           Andweweremuchsaddenedbythereflectionthatthelotofthispoorwanderermightpossiblybeourown,aftermanyyears’residenceontheisland,unlessweshouldberescuedbythevisitofsomevesselorthearrivalofnatives.Havingnocluewhatevertoaccountforthepresenceofthispoorhumanbeinginsuchalonelyspot,wefelltoconjecturingwhatcouldhavebroughthimthere.Iwasinclinedtothinkthathemusthavebeenashipwreckedsailor,whosevesselhadbeenlosthere,andallthecrewbeendrownedexcepthimselfandhisdogandcat.ButJackthoughtitmorelikelythathehadrunawayfromhisvessel,andhadtakenthedogandcattokeephimcompany.Wewerealsomuchoccupiedinourmindswiththewonderfuldifferencebetweenthecatandthedog.Forherewesawthatwhiletheoneperishedlikealovingfriendbyitsmaster’sside,withitsheadrestingonhisbosom,theotherhadsoughttosustainitselfbyprowlingabroadintheforest,andhadlivedinsolitudetoagoodoldage.However,wedidnotconcludefromthisthatthecatwasdestituteofaffection,forwecouldnotforgetitsemotionsonfirstmeetingwithus;butwesawfromthisthatthedoghadagreatdealmoreofgenerousloveinitsnaturethanthecat,becauseitnotonlyfounditimpossibletoliveafterthedeathofitsmaster,butitmustneeds,whenitcametodie,crawltohissideandrestitsheaduponhislifelessbreast.

           Whilewewerethinkingonthesethings,andexaminingintoeverythingabouttheroom,wewereattractedbyanexclamationfromPeterkin.
