           Ithadonewindow,orratherasmallframeinwhichawindowmightperhapsoncehavebeen,butwhichwasnowempty.Thedoorwasexceedinglylow,andformedofroughboards,andtheroofwascoveredwithbroadcocoa-nutandplantainleaves.Buteverypartofitwasinastateoftheutmostdecay.Mossandgreenmattergrewinspotsalloverit.Thewoodworkwasquiteperforatedwithholes;theroofhadnearlyfallenin,andappearedtobepreventedfromdoingsoaltogetherbythethickmattingofcreepingplantsandtheinterlacedbrancheswhichyearsofneglecthadallowedtocoveritalmostentirely;whilethethick,luxuriantbranchesofthebread-fruitandothertreesspreadaboveit,andflungadeep,sombreshadowoverthespot,asiftoguarditfromtheheatandthelightofday.Weconversedlongandinwhispersaboutthisstrangehabitationereweventuredtoapproachit;andwhenatlengthwedidso,itwas,atleastonmypart,withfeelingsofawe.

           AtfirstJackendeavouredtopeepinatthewindow;butfromthedeepshadowofthetreesalreadymentioned,andthegloomwithin,hecouldnotclearlydiscernobjects,soweliftedthelatchandpushedopenthedoor.Weobservedthatthelatchwasmadeofiron,andalmosteatenawaywithrust.Inthelikeconditionwerealsothehinges,whichcreakedasthedoorswungback.Onentering,westoodstillandgazedaroundus,whileweweremuchimpressedwiththedrearystillnessoftheroom.Butwhatwesawtheresurprisedandshockedusnotalittle.
