Chapter VI

           

           ButwhenatlastImetCharlesStrickland,itwasundercircumstanceswhichallowedmetodonomorethanjustmakehisacquaintance.OnemorningMrs.Stricklandsentmeroundanotetosaythatshewasgivingadinner-partythatevening,andoneofherguestshadfailedher.Sheaskedmetostopthegap.Shewrote:

           "It’sonlydecenttowarnyouthatyouwillbeboredtoextinction.Itwasathoroughlydullpartyfromthebeginning,butifyouwillcomeIshallbeuncommonlygrateful.AndyouandIcanhavealittlechatbyourselves."

           Itwasonlyneighbourlytoaccept.

           WhenMrs.Stricklandintroducedmetoherhusband,hegavemearatherindifferenthandtoshake.Turningtohimgaily,sheattemptedasmalljest.

           "IaskedhimtoshowhimthatIreallyhadahusband.Ithinkhewasbeginningtodoubtit."

           Stricklandgavethepolitelittlelaughwithwhichpeopleacknowledgeafacetiousnessinwhichtheyseenothingfunny,butdidnotspeak.Newarrivalsclaimedmyhost’sattention,andIwaslefttomyself.Whenatlastwewereallassembled,waitingfordinnertobeannounced,Ireflected,whileIchattedwiththewomanIhadbeenaskedto"takein,"thatcivilisedmanpractisesastrangeingenuityinwastingontediousexercisesthebriefspanofhislife.Itwasthekindofpartywhichmakesyouwonderwhythehostesshastroubledtobidherguests,andwhytheguestshavetroubledtocome.Thereweretenpeople.Theymetwithindifference,andwouldpartwithrelief.Itwas,ofcourse,apurelysocialfunction.
