           Thedining-roomwasinconvenientlycrowded.TherewasaK.C.andhiswife,aGovernmentofficialandhiswife,Mrs.Strickland’ssisterandherhusband,ColonelMacAndrew,andthewifeofaMemberofParliament.ItwasbecausetheMemberofParliamentfoundthathecouldnotleavetheHousethatIhadbeeninvited.Therespectabilityofthepartywasportentous.Thewomenweretoonicetobewelldressed,andtoosureoftheirpositiontobeamusing.Themenweresolid.Therewasaboutallofthemanairofwell-satisfiedprosperity.

           Everyonetalkedalittlelouderthannaturalinaninstinctivedesiretomakethepartygo,andtherewasagreatdealofnoiseintheroom.Buttherewasnogeneralconversation.Eachonetalkedtohisneighbour;tohisneighbourontherightduringthesoup,fish,andentree;tohisneighbourontheleftduringtheroast,sweet,andsavoury.Theytalkedofthepoliticalsituationandofgolf,oftheirchildrenandthelatestplay,ofthepicturesattheRoyalAcademy,oftheweatherandtheirplansfortheholidays.Therewasneverapause,andthenoisegrewlouder.Mrs.Stricklandmightcongratulateherselfthatherpartywasasuccess.Herhusbandplayedhispartwithdecorum.
