HADnotbeeninTahitilongbeforeImetCaptainNichols.HecameinonemorningwhenIwashavingbreakfastontheterraceofthehotelandintroducedhimself.HehadheardthatIwasinterestedinCharlesStrickland,andannouncedthathewascometohaveatalkabouthim.TheyareasfondofgossipinTahitiasinanEnglishvillage,andoneortwoenquiriesIhadmadeforpicturesbyStricklandhadbeenquicklyspread.Iaskedthestrangerifhehadbreakfasted.
