TheAsiledeNuitisalargestonebuildingwherepauperandvagabondmaygetabedforaweek,providedtheirpapersareinorderandtheycanpersuadethefriarsinchargethattheyareworkingmen.CaptainNicholsnoticedStricklandforhissizeandhissingularappearanceamongthecrowdthatwaitedforthedoorstoopen;theywaitedlistlessly,somewalkingtoandfro,someleaningagainstthewall,andothersseatedonthecurbwiththeirfeetinthegutter;andwhentheyfiledintotheofficeheheardthemonkwhoreadhispapersaddresshiminEnglish.Buthedidnothaveachancetospeaktohim,since,asheenteredthecommon-room,amonkcameinwithahugeBibleinhisarms,mountedapulpitwhichwasattheendoftheroom,andbegantheservicewhichthewretchedoutcastshadtoendureasthepriceoftheirlodging.
