           IhavetriedtoputsomeconnectionintothevariousthingsCaptainNicholstoldmeaboutStrickland,andIheresetthemdowninthebestorderIcan.Theymadeoneanother’sacquaintanceduringthelatterpartofthewinterfollowingmylastmeetingwithStricklandinParis.HowhehadpassedtheinterveningmonthsIdonotknow,butlifemusthavebeenveryhard,forCaptainNicholssawhimfirstintheAsiledeNuit.TherewasastrikeatMarseillesatthetime,andStrickland,havingcometotheendofhisresources,hadapparentlyfounditimpossibletoearnthesmallsumheneededtokeepbodyandsoultogether.
