           HeandStricklandwereassignedtodifferentrooms,andwhen,thrownoutofbedatfiveinthemorningbyastalwartmonk,hehadmadehisbedandwashedhisface,Stricklandhadalreadydisappeared.CaptainNicholswanderedaboutthestreetsforanhourofbittercold,andthenmadehiswaytothePlaceVictorGelu,wherethesailor-menarewonttocongregate.Dozingagainstthepedestalofastatue,hesawStricklandagain.Hegavehimakicktoawakenhim.

           "Comeandhavebreakfast,mate,"hesaid.

           "Gotohell,"answeredStrickland.

           Irecognisedmyfriend’slimitedvocabulary,andIpreparedtoregardCaptainNicholsasatrustworthywitness.

           "Busted?"askedtheCaptain.

           "Blastyou,"answeredStrickland.

           Afteramoment’shesitation,Stricklandscrambledtohisfeet,andtogethertheywenttotheBoucheedePain,wherethehungryaregivenawedgeofbread,whichtheymusteatthereandthen,foritisforbiddentotakeitaway;andthentotheCuilleredeSoupe,whereforaweek,atelevenandfour,youmaygetabowlofthin,saltsoup.Thetwobuildingsareplacedfarapart,sothatonlythestarvingshouldbetemptedtomakeuseofthem.Sotheyhadbreakfast,andsobeganthequeercompanionshipofCharlesStricklandandCaptainNichols.

           TheymusthavespentsomethinglikefourmonthsatMarseillesinoneanother’ssociety.Theircareerwasdevoidofadventure,ifbyadventureyoumeanunexpectedorthrillingincident,fortheirdayswereoccupiedinthepursuitofenoughmoneytogetanight’slodgingandsuchfoodaswouldstaythepangsofhunger.
