ItwasnottillfouryearsafterStrickland’sdeaththatMauriceHuretwrotethatarticleintheMercuredeFrancewhichrescuedtheunknownpainterfromoblivionandblazedthetrailwhichsucceedingwriters,withmoreorlessdocility,havefollowed.ForalongtimenocritichasenjoyedinFranceamoreincontestableauthority,anditwasimpossiblenottobeimpressedbytheclaimshemade;theyseemedextravagant;butlaterjudgmentshaveconfirmedhisestimate,andthereputationofCharlesStricklandisnowfirmlyestablishedonthelineswhichhelaiddown.Theriseofthisreputationisoneofthemostromanticincidentsinthehistoryofart.ButIdonotproposetodealwithCharlesStrickland’sworkexceptinsofarasittouchesuponhischaracter.
