Itwasinvainformetosay,"Now,Stubbs,IfeelquitesurefromwhatIknowofyouthatyouwillgoonifIridealittlewhile,"forthemomentIlefthim,hestoodstockstillagain.ConsequentlyIwasobligedtoleadtheway,asbefore;andinthisorderwereturnedhome,tothegreatdelightofthevillage.CharleyandIhadreasontocallitthemostfriendlyofvillages,Iamsure,forinaweek’stimethepeopleweresogladtoseeusgoby,thougheversofrequentlyinthecourseofaday,thattherewerefacesofgreetingineverycottage.Ihadknownmanyofthegrownpeoplebeforeandalmostallthechildren,butnowtheverysteeplebegantowearafamiliarandaffectionatelook.Amongmynewfriendswasanoldoldwomanwholivedinsuchalittlethatchedandwhitewasheddwellingthatwhentheoutsideshutterwasturneduponitshinges,itshutupthewholehouse-front.Thisoldladyhadagrandsonwhowasasailor,andIwrotealettertohimforheranddrewatthetopofitthechimney-cornerinwhichshehadbroughthimupandwherehisoldstoolyetoccupieditsoldplace.Thiswasconsideredbythewholevillagethemostwonderfulachievementintheworld,butwhenananswercamebackallthewayfromPlymouth,inwhichhementionedthathewasgoingtotakethepictureallthewaytoAmerica,andfromAmericawouldwriteagain,Igotallthecreditthatoughttohavebeengiventothepost-officeandwasinvestedwiththemeritofthewholesystem.
