ThedayswhenIfrequentedthatmiserablecornerwhichmydeargirlbrightenedcanneverfadeinmyremembrance.Ineverseeit,andIneverwishtoseeitnow;Ihavebeenthereonlyoncesince,butinmymemorythereisamournfulgloryshiningontheplacewhichwillshineforever.Notadaypassedwithoutmygoingthere,ofcourse.AtfirstIfoundMr.Skimpolethere,ontwoorthreeoccasions,idlyplayingthepianoandtalkinginhisusualvivaciousstrain.Now,besidesmyverymuchmistrustingtheprobabilityofhisbeingtherewithoutmakingRichardpoorer,IfeltasifthereweresomethinginhiscarelessgaietytooinconsistentwithwhatIknewofthedepthsofAda’slife.Iclearlyperceived,too,thatAdasharedmyfeelings.Ithereforeresolved,aftermuchthinkingofit,tomakeaprivatevisittoMr.Skimpoleandtrydelicatelytoexplainmyself.Mydeargirlwasthegreatconsiderationthatmademebold.Isetoffonemorning,accompaniedbyCharley,forSomersTown.AsIapproachedthehouse,Iwasstronglyinclinedtoturnback,forIfeltwhatadesperateattemptitwastomakeanimpressiononMr.Skimpoleandhowextremelylikelyitwasthathewouldsignallydefeatme.However,Ithoughtthatbeingthere,Iwouldgothroughwithit.IknockedwithatremblinghandatMr.Skimpole’sdoor—literallywithahand,fortheknockerwasgone—andafteralongparleygainedadmissionfromanIrishwoman,whowasintheareawhenIknocked,breakingupthelidofawater-buttwithapokertolightthefirewith.Mr.
