CharleyandIdidnotsetoffaloneuponourexpeditionintoLincolnshire.MyguardianhadmadeuphismindnottolosesightofmeuntilIwassafeinMr.Boythorn’shouse,soheaccompaniedus,andweweretwodaysupontheroad.Ifoundeverybreathofair,andeveryscent,andeveryflowerandleafandbladeofgrass,andeverypassingcloud,andeverythinginnature,morebeautifulandwonderfultomethanIhadeverfoundityet.Thiswasmyfirstgainfrommyillness.HowlittleIhadlost,whenthewideworldwassofullofdelightforme.Myguardianintendingtogobackimmediately,weappointed,onourwaydown,adaywhenmydeargirlshouldcome.Iwroteheraletter,ofwhichhetookcharge,andheleftuswithinhalfanhourofourarrivalatourdestination,onadelightfuleveningintheearlysummer-time.Ifagoodfairyhadbuiltthehouseformewithawaveofherwand,andIhadbeenaprincessandherfavouredgod-child,Icouldnothavebeenmoreconsideredinit.SomanypreparationsweremadeformeandsuchanendearingremembrancewasshownofallmylittletastesandlikingsthatIcouldhavesatdown,overcome,adozentimesbeforeIhadrevisitedhalftherooms.Ididbetterthanthat,however,byshowingthemalltoCharleyinstead.Charley’sdelightcalmedmine;andafterwehadhadawalkinthegarden,andCharleyhadexhaustedherwholevocabularyofadmiringexpressions,IwasastranquillyhappyasIoughttohavebeen.
