AChanceryjudgeoncehadthekindnesstoinformme,asoneofacompanyofsomehundredandfiftymenandwomennotlabouringunderanysuspicionsoflunacy,thattheCourtofChancery,thoughtheshiningsubjectofmuchpopularprejudice(atwhichpointIthoughtthejudge’seyehadacastinmydirection),wasalmostimmaculate.Therehadbeen,headmitted,atrivialblemishorsoinitsrateofprogress,butthiswasexaggeratedandhadbeenentirelyowingtothe"parsimonyofthepublic,"whichguiltypublic,itappeared,hadbeenuntillatelybentinthemostdeterminedmanneronbynomeansenlargingthenumberofChanceryjudgesappointed—IbelievebyRichardtheSecond,butanyotherkingwilldoaswell.ThisseemedtometooprofoundajoketobeinsertedinthebodyofthisbookorIshouldhaverestoredittoConversationKengeortoMr.Vholes,withoneorotherofwhomIthinkitmusthaveoriginated.InsuchmouthsImighthavecoupleditwithanaptquotationfromoneofShakespeare’ssonnets:Butasitiswholesomethattheparsimoniouspublicshouldknowwhathasbeendoing,andstillisdoing,inthisconnexion,ImentionherethateverythingsetforthinthesepagesconcerningtheCourtofChanceryissubstantiallytrue,andwithinthetruth.ThecaseofGridleyisinnoessentialalteredfromoneofactualoccurrence,madepublicbyadisinterestedpersonwhowasprofessionallyacquaintedwiththewholeofthemonstrouswrongfrombeginningtoend.
