           Butoneotherdayhadintervenedwhen,earlyinthemorningasweweregoingtobreakfast,Mr.WoodcourtcameinhastewiththeastoundingnewsthataterriblemurderhadbeencommittedforwhichMr.Georgehadbeenapprehendedandwasincustody.WhenhetoldusthatalargerewardwasofferedbySirLeicesterDedlockforthemurderer’sapprehension,Ididnotinmyfirstconsternationunderstandwhy;butafewmorewordsexplainedtomethatthemurderedpersonwasSirLeicester’slawyer,andimmediatelymymother’sdreadofhimrushedintomyremembrance.Thisunforeseenandviolentremovalofonewhomshehadlongwatchedanddistrustedandwhohadlongwatchedanddistrustedher,oneforwhomshecouldhavehadfewintervalsofkindness,alwaysdreadinginhimadangerousandsecretenemy,appearedsoawfulthatmyfirstthoughtswereofher.Howappallingtohearofsuchadeathandbeabletofeelnopity!Howdreadfultoremember,perhaps,thatshehadsometimesevenwishedtheoldmanawaywhowassoswiftlyhurriedoutoflife!Suchcrowdingreflections,increasingthedistressandfearIalwaysfeltwhenthenamewasmentioned,mademesoagitatedthatIcouldscarcelyholdmyplaceatthetable.IwasquiteunabletofollowtheconversationuntilIhadhadalittletimetorecover.ButwhenIcametomyselfandsawhowshockedmyguardianwasandfoundthattheywereearnestlyspeakingofthesuspectedmanandrecallingeveryfavourableimpressionwehadformedofhimoutofthegoodwehadknownofhim,myinterestandmyfearsweresostronglyarousedinhisbehalfthatIwasquitesetupagain.
