Thentherewasaponyexpresslyformyriding,achubbyponywithashortneckandamanealloverhiseyeswhocouldcanter—whenhewould—soeasilyandquietlythathewasatreasure.InaveryfewdayshewouldcometomeinthepaddockwhenIcalledhim,andeatoutofmyhand,andfollowmeabout.Wearrivedatsuchacapitalunderstandingthatwhenhewasjoggingwithmelazily,andratherobstinately,downsomeshadylane,ifIpattedhisneckandsaid,"Stubbs,Iamsurprisedyoudon’tcanterwhenyouknowhowmuchIlikeit;andIthinkyoumightobligeme,foryouareonlygettingstupidandgoingtosleep,"hewouldgivehisheadacomicalshakeortwoandsetoffdirectly,whileCharleywouldstandstillandlaughwithsuchenjoymentthatherlaughterwaslikemusic.Idon’tknowwhohadgivenStubbshisname,butitseemedtobelongtohimasnaturallyashisroughcoat.Onceweputhiminalittlechaiseanddrovehimtriumphantlythroughthegreenlanesforfivemiles;butallatonce,aswewereextollinghimtotheskies,heseemedtotakeitillthatheshouldhavebeenaccompaniedsofarbythecircleoftantalizinglittlegnatsthathadbeenhoveringroundandroundhisearsthewholewaywithoutappearingtoadvanceaninch,andstoppedtothinkaboutit.Isupposehecametothedecisionthatitwasnottobeborne,forhesteadilyrefusedtomoveuntilIgavethereinstoCharleyandgotoutandwalked,whenhefollowedmewithasturdysortofgoodhumour,puttinghisheadundermyarmandrubbinghisearagainstmysleeve.
