Nextdaywewalkedoutwiththisinterestingman,andweremuchentertainedandinstructedbyhisconversationaswerambledthroughthecool,shadygrovesofbananas,citrons,limes,andothertrees,orsaunteredamongthecottagesofthenatives,andwatchedthemwhiletheylaboureddiligentlyinthetaro-bedsormanufacturedthetapa,ornativecloth.TosomeoftheseJackputquestions,throughthemediumofthemissionary;andtherepliesweresuchastosurpriseusattheextentoftheirknowledge.Indeed,Peterkinverytrulyremarkedthat"theyseemedtoknowaconsiderabledealmorethanJackhimself!"
Amongotherpiecesofinterestinginformationthatweobtainedwasthefollowing,inregardtocoralformations:
"TheislandsofthePacific,"saidourfriend,"areofthreedifferentkindsorclasses.Thoseofthefirstclassarevolcanic,mountainous,andwild—someshootingtheirjaggedpeaksintothecloudsatanelevationoftenandfifteenthousandfeet.Thoseofthesecondclassareofcrystallisedlimestone,andvaryinheightfromonehundredtofivehundredfeet.Thehillsonthesearenotsowildorbrokenasthoseofthefirstclass,butarerichlyclothedwithvegetation,andverybeautiful.IhavenodoubtthattheCoralIslandonwhichyouwerewreckedwasoneofthisclass.Theyaresupposedtohavebeenupheavedfromthebottomoftheseabyvolcanicagency;buttheyarenotthemselvesvolcanicintheirnature,neitheraretheyofcoralformation.
