           Itwaswithfeelingsofawe,notunmingledwithfear,thatInowseatedmyselfonthecabinskylightandgazedupontherigidfeaturesofmylatecomrade,whilemymindwanderedoverhispasthistoryandcontemplatedwithanxietymypresentposition.AloneinthemidstofthewidePacific,havingamostimperfectknowledgeofnavigation,andinaschoonerrequiringatleasteightmenasherpropercrew!ButIwillnottaxthereader’spatiencewithaminutedetailofmyfeelingsanddoingsduringthefirstfewdaysthatfollowedthedeathofmycompanion.IwillmerelymentionthatItiedacannon-balltohisfeet,andwithfeelingsofthedeepestsorrow,consignedhimtothedeep.
