           Afterthebattlewasover,thesavagescrowdedroundusandgazedatusinsurprise,whiletheycontinuedtopouruponusafloodofquestions,which,beingwhollyunintelligible,ofcoursewecouldnotanswer.However,bywayofputtinganendtoit,Jacktookthechief(whohadrecoveredfromtheeffectsofhiswound)bythehandandshookitwarmly.Nosoonerdidtheblacksseethatthiswasmeanttoexpressgood-willthantheyshookhandswithusallround.AfterthisceremonywasgonethroughJackwentuptothegirl,whohadneveroncemovedfromtherockwhereshehadbeenleft,buthadcontinuedaneagerspectatorofallthathadpassed.Hemadesignstohertofollowhim,andthen,takingthechiefbythehand,wasabouttoconducthimtothebowerwhenhiseyefellonthepoorinfantwhichhadbeenthrownintotheseaandwasstilllyingontheshore.Droppingthechief’shandhehastenedtowardsit,and,tohisgreatjoy,foundittobestillalive.Wealsofoundthatthemotherwasbeginningtorecoverslowly.

           "There,that’sallright,"saidJack,oncemoretakingthechiefbythehand.
