           Foralong,longmonthweremainedinourdarkanddrearyprison,duringwhichdismaltimewedidnotseethefaceofahumanbeingexceptthatofthesilentsavagewhobroughtusourdailyfood.

           TherehavebeenoneortwoseasonsinmylifeduringwhichIhavefeltasifthedarknessofsorrowanddesolationthatcrushedmyinmostheartcouldneverpassawayuntildeathshouldmakemeceasetofeel.Thepresentwassuchaseason.

           Duringthefirstpartofourconfinementwefeltacoldchillatourheartseverytimeweheardafootfallnearthecave,dreadinglestitshouldprovetobethatofourexecutioner.Butastimedraggedheavilyonweceasedtofeelthisalarm,andbegantoexperiencesuchadeep,irrepressiblelongingforfreedomthatwechafedandfrettedinourconfinementliketigers.Thenafeelingofdespaircameoverus,andweactuallylongedforthetimewhenthesavageswouldtakeusforthtodie.Butthesechangestookplaceverygradually,andweremingledsometimeswithbrighterthoughts;forthereweretimeswhenwesat,inthatdarkcavernonourledgeofrock,andconversedalmostpleasantlyaboutthepastuntilwewell-nighforgotthedrearypresent.Butweseldomventuredtotouchuponthefuture.

           Afewdecayedleavesandboughsformedourbed,andascantysupplyofyamsandtaro,broughttousonceaday,constitutedourfood.

           "Well,Ralph,howhaveyouslept?"saidJackinalistlesstoneonrisingonemorningfromhishumblecouch."Wereyoumuchdisturbedbythewindlastnight?"
