Rovinghasalwaysbeen,andstillis,myrulingpassion,thejoyofmyheart,theverysunshineofmyexistence.Inchildhood,inboyhood,andinman’sestateIhavebeenarover;notamererambleramongthewoodyglensanduponthehill-topsofmyownnativeland,butanenthusiasticroverthroughoutthelengthandbreadthofthewide,wideworld.
Itwasawild,blacknightofhowlingstorm,thenightonwhichIwasbornonthefoamingbosomofthebroadAtlanticOcean.Myfatherwasasea-captain;mygrandfatherwasasea-captain;mygreat-grandfatherhadbeenamarine.Nobodycouldtellpositivelywhatoccupationhisfatherhadfollowed;butmydearmotherusedtoassertthathehadbeenamidshipman,whosegrandfather,onthemother’sside,hadbeenanadmiralintheRoyalNavy.Atanyrate,weknewthatasfarbackasourfamilycouldbetraced,ithadbeenintimatelyconnectedwiththegreatwaterywaste.Indeed,thiswasthecaseonbothsidesofthehouse;formymotheralwayswenttoseawithmyfatheronhislongvoyages,andsospentthegreaterpartofherlifeuponthewater.
Thusitwas,Isuppose,thatIcametoinheritarovingdisposition.SoonafterIwasborn,myfather,beingold,retiredfromaseafaringlife,purchasedasmallcottageinafishingvillageonthewestcoastofEngland,andsettleddowntospendtheeveningofhislifeontheshoresofthatseawhichhadforsomanyyearsbeenhishome.ItwasnotlongafterthisthatIbegantoshowtherovingspiritthatdweltwithinme.Forsometimepastmyinfantlegshadbeengainingstrength,sothatIcametobedissatisfiedwithrubbingtheskinoffmychubbykneesbywalkingonthem,andmademanyattemptstostandupandwalklikeaman—allofwhichattempts,however,resultedinmysittingdownviolentlyandinsuddensurprise.
