Onenightthecat—feelingadesireforcompany,Isuppose—tookitswaytothehouseofachiefwhohadrecentlybeenconvertedtoChristianity,andhadbeguntolearntoreadandpray.Thechief’swife,whowassittingawakeathissidewhileheslept,beheldwithhorrortwofiresglisteninginthedoorway,andheardwithsurpriseamysteriousvoice.Almostpetrifiedwithfear,sheawokeherhusband,andbegantoupbraidhimforforsakinghisoldreligionandburninghisgod,who,shedeclared,wasnowcometobeavengedofthem.‘Getupandpray!getupandpray!’shecried.Thechiefarose,andonopeninghiseyes,beheldthesameglaringlightsandheardthesameominoussound.Impelledbytheextremeurgencyofthecase,hecommenced,withallpossiblevehemence,tovociferatethealphabet,asaprayertoGodtodeliverthemfromthevengeanceofSatan!Onhearingthis,thecat,asmuchalarmedasthemselves,fledprecipitatelyaway,leavingthechiefandhiswifecongratulatingthemselvesontheefficacyoftheirprayer."
Weweremuchdivertedwiththisanecdote,whichtheteacherrelatedinEnglishsogoodthatwecertainlycouldnothavesupposedhimanativebutforthecolourofhisfaceandtheforeignaccentinhistone.
