Wehadnotbeenanhourinthehouseofthiskind-heartedmanwhenwewereconvincedofthetruthofhisstatementastotheirnumbers;fortheratsranaboutthefloorsindozens,andduringourmealtwomenwerestationedatthetabletokeepthemoff!
"Whatapityyouhavenocats!"saidPeterkin;andheaimedablowatanotherrecklessintruder,andmissedit.
"Wewouldindeedbegladtohaveafew,"rejoinedtheteacher,"buttheyaredifficulttobegot.Thehogs,wefind,areverygoodrat-killers;buttheydonotseemtobeabletokeepthenumbersdown.Ihaveheardthattheyarebetterthancats."
Astheteachersaidthis,hisgood-naturedblackfacewaswrinkledwithasmileofmerriment.ObservingthatIhadnoticedit,hesaid:
