"Astothemannerinwhichcoralislandsandreefsareformed,therearevariousopinionsonthispoint.Iwillgiveyouwhatseemstomethemostprobabletheory—atheory,Imayadd,whichisheldbysomeofthegoodandscientificmissionaries.Itiswellknownthatthereismuchlimeinsaltwater;itisalsoknownthatcoraliscomposedoflime.Itissupposedthatthepolypes,orcoralinsects,havethepowerofattractingthislimetotheirbodies,andwiththismaterialtheybuildtheirlittlecellsorhabitations.Theychoosethesummitofavolcano,orthetopofasubmarinemountain,asafoundationonwhichtobuild,foritisfoundthattheyneverworkatanygreatdepthbelowthesurface.Onthistheywork.Thepolypesonthemountain-top,ofcourse,reachthesurfacefirst;thenthoseattheouteredgesreachthetopsoonerthantheothersbetweenthemandthecentre,thusformingthecoralreefsurroundingthelagoonofwaterandthecentralisland.Afterthat,theinsectswithinthelagoonceaseworking.Whenthesurfaceofthewaterisreached,thesemyriadsofwonderfulcreaturesdie.Thenbirdsvisitthespot,andseedsarethusconveyedthither,whichtakerootandspringupandflourish.Thusarecommencedthosecorallineisletsofwhichyouhaveseensomanyintheseseas.Thereefsroundthelargeislandsareformedinasimilarmanner.
