Itwasonthe13thofDecember,1642,thattheDutchnavigatorTasman,afterdiscoveringVanDiemen’sLand,sightedtheunknownshoresofNewZealand.Hecoastedalongforseveraldays,andonthe17thofDecemberhisshipspenetratedintoalargebay,which,terminatinginanarrowstrait,separatedthetwoislands.
ThenorthernislandwascalledbythenativesIkana-Mani,awordwhichsignifiesthefishofMani.ThesouthernislandwascalledTavai-Pouna-Mou,"thewhalethatyieldsthegreen-stones."
AbelTasmansenthisboatsonshore,andtheyreturnedaccompaniedbytwocanoesandanoisycompanyofnatives.Thesesavagesweremiddleheight,ofbrownoryellowcomplexion,angularbones,harshvoices,andblackhair,whichwasdressedintheJapanesemanner,andsurmountedbyatallwhitefeather.
ThisfirstinterviewbetweenEuropeansandaboriginesseemedtopromiseamicableandlastingintercourse.Butthenextday,whenoneofTasman’sboatswaslookingforananchoragenearertotheland,sevencanoes,mannedbyagreatnumberofnatives,attackedthemfiercely.Theboatcapsizedandfilled.Thequartermasterincommandwasinstantlystruckwithabadly-sharpenedspear,andfellintothesea.Ofhissixcompanionsfourwerekilled;theothertwoandthequartermasterwereabletoswimtotheships,andwerepickedupandrecovered
