The Storm on the Indian Ocean

           Twodaysafterthisconversation,JohnManglesannouncedthattheDuncanwasinlongitude113degrees37minutes,andthepassengersfoundonconsultingthechartthatconsequentlyCapeBernouillicouldnotbemorethanfivedegreesoff.TheymustbesailingtheninthatpartoftheIndianOceanwhichwashedtheAustraliancontinent,andinfourdaysmighthopetoseeCapeBernouilliappearonthehorizon.

           Hithertotheyachthadbeenfavoredbyastrongwesterlybreeze,butnowtherewereevidentsignsthatacalmwasimpending,andonthe13thofDecemberthewindfellentirely;asthesailorssay,therewasnotenoughtofillacap.

           Therewasnosayinghowlongthisstateoftheatmospheremightlast.Butforthepowerfulpropellertheyachtwouldhavebeenobligedtoliemotionlessasalog.Theyoungcaptainwasverymuchannoyed,however,attheprospectofemptyinghiscoal-bunkers,forhehadcoveredhisshipwithcanvas,intendingtotakeadvantageoftheslightestbreeze.
