           Glenarvanandhiswholeparty,eventheMajorhimself,werecryingandembracingeachother.Theyweredeliriouswithjoy.Thegeographerwasabsolutelymad.Hefriskedabout,telescopeinhand,pointingitatthelastcanoeapproachingtheshore.

           ButatthesightofGlenarvanandhiscompanions,withtheirclothinginrags,andthin,haggardfaces,bearingmarksofhorriblesufferings,thecrewceasedtheirnoisydemonstrations.Thesewerespecterswhohadreturnednotthebright,adventuroustravelerswhohadlefttheyachtthreemonthsbefore,sofullofhope!Chance,andchanceonly,hadbroughtthembacktothedeckoftheyachttheyneverthoughttoseeagain.Andinwhatastateofexhaustionandfeebleness.Butbeforethinkingoffatigue,orattendingtotheimperiousdemandsofhungerandthirst,GlenarvanquestionedTomAustinabouthisbeingonthiscoast.

           WhyhadtheDuncancometotheeasterncoastofNewZealand?HowwasitnotinthehandsofBenJoyce?BywhatprovidentialfatalityhadGodbroughttheminthetrackofthefugitives?
