ONthe2dofJanuary,atsunrise,thetravelersfordedtheColbanandtheCaupesperivers.Thehalfoftheirjourneywasnowaccomplished.Infifteendaysmore,shouldtheirjourneycontinuetobeprosperous,thelittlepartywouldreachTwofoldBay.
Theywereallingoodhealth.AllthatPaganelsaidofthehygienicqualitiesoftheclimatewasrealized.Therewaslittleornohumidity,andtheheatwasquitebearable.Neitherhorsesnorbullockscouldcomplainofitanymorethanhumanbeings.TheorderofthemarchhadbeenchangedinonerespectsincetheaffairofCamdenBridge.ThatcriminalcatastropheontherailwaymadeAyrtontakesundryprecautions,whichhadhithertobeenunnecessary.Thehuntersneverlostsightofthewagon,andwhenevertheycamped,onewasalwaysplacedonwatch.Morningandeveningthefirearmswereprimedafresh.Itwascertainthatagangofruffianswasprowlingaboutthecountry,andthoughtherewasnocauseforactualfear,itwaswelltobereadyforwhatevermighthappen.
ItneedhardlybesaidtheseprecautionswereadoptedwithouttheknowledgeofLadyHelenaandMaryGrant,asLordGlenarvandidnotwishtoalarmthem.
Theywerebynomeansunnecessary,however,foranyimprudenceorcarelessnessmighthavecostthetravelersdear.OthersbesideGlenarvanwereontheirguard.Inlonelysettlementsandonstations,theinhabitantsandthesquatterspreparedcarefullyagainstanyattackorsurprise.Housesareclosedatnightfall;thedogsletlooseinsidethefences,barkedattheslightestsound.
