A Country of Paradoxes

           Mostfortunatelythe37thparalleldidnotcrosstheimmensedeserts,inaccessibleregions,whichhavecostmanymartyrstosciencealready.Glenarvancouldneverhaveencounteredthem.HehadonlytodowiththesouthernpartofAustraliaviz.,withanarrowportionoftheprovinceofAdelaide,withthewholeofVictoria,andwiththetopofthereversedtrianglewhichformsNewSouthWales.

           Itisscarcelysixty-twomilesfromCapeBernouillitothefrontiersofVictoria.Itwasnotaboveatwodays’march,andAyrtonreckonedontheirsleepingnextnightatApsley,themostwesterlytownofVictoria.

           Thecommencementofajourneyisalwaysmarkedbyardor,bothinthehorsesandthehorsemen.Thisiswellenoughinthehorsemen,butifthehorsesaretogofar,theirspeedmustbemoderatedandtheirstrengthhusbanded.Itwas,therefore,fixedthattheaveragejourneyeverydayshouldnotbemorethanfromtwenty-fivetothirtymiles.

           Besides,thepaceofthehorsesmustberegulatedbytheslowerpaceofthebullocks,trulymechanicalengineswhichloseintimewhattheygaininpower.Thewagon,withitspassengersandprovisions,wastheverycenterofthecaravan,themovingfortress.Thehorsemenmightactasscouts,butmustneverbefarawayfromit.
