           Thenoondaymealwasspread;thesouptureenwassmokingbetweenroastbeefandalegofmutton,surroundedbylargeplatesofolives,grapes,andoranges.Thenecessarywasthereandtherewasnolackofthesuperfluous.Thehostandhostessweresopleasant,andthebigtable,withitsabundantfare,lookedsoinviting,thatitwouldhavebeenungraciousnottohaveseatedthemselves.Thefarmservants,onequalfootingwiththeirmaster,werealreadyintheirplacestotaketheirshareofthemeal.PaddyO’Moorepointedtotheseatsreservedforthestrangers,andsaidtoGlenarvan:

           "Iwaswaitingforyou."

           "Waitingforus!"repliedGlenarvaninatoneofsurprise.
