           Graduallyfieldscoveredwithcerealscameinsight,wholeacrescoveredwithbristlingearsofcorn,hay-ricksintheshapeoflargebee-hives,bloomingorchards,afinegardenworthyofHorace,inwhichtheusefulandagreeablewereblended;thencamesheds;commonswiselydistributed,andlastofall,aplaincomfortabledwelling-house,crownedbyajoyous-soundingmill,andfannedandshadedbyitslongsailsastheykeptconstantlymovinground.

           Justatthatmomentapleasant-facedman,aboutfiftyyearsofage,cameoutofthehouse,warned,bytheloudbarkingoffourdogs,ofthearrivalofstrangers.Hewasfollowedbyfivehandsomestrappinglads,hissons,andtheirmother,afinetallwoman.Therewasnomistakingthelittlegroup.ThiswasaperfecttypeoftheIrishcolonistamanwho,wearyofthemiseriesofhiscountry,hadcome,withhisfamily,toseekfortuneandhappinessbeyondtheseas.

           BeforeGlenarvanandhispartyhadtimetoreachthehouseandpresentthemselvesindueform,theyheardthecordialwords:"Strangers!welcometothehouseofPaddyO’Moore!"

           "YouareIrish,"saidGlenarvan,"ifIamnotmistaken,"warmlygraspingtheoutstretchedhandofthecolonist.

           "Iwas,"repliedPaddyO’Moore,"butnowIamAustralian.Comein,gentlemen,whoeveryoumaybe,thishouseisyours."

           Itwasimpossiblenottoacceptaninvitationgivenwithsuchgrace.LadyHelenaandMaryGrantwereledinbyMrs.O’Moore,whilethegentlemenwereassistedbyhissturdysonstodisencumberthemselvesoftheirfire-arms.
