Hehadnotproceededtwohundredsteps,however,when,"bythegreatestchanceintheworld,"hemetFix.Thedetectiveseemedwhollytakenbysurprise.What!HadMr.FoggandhimselfcrossedthePacifictogether,andnotmetonthesteamer!AtleastFixfelthonouredtobeholdoncemorethegentlemantowhomheowedsomuch,and,ashisbusinessrecalledhimtoEurope,heshouldbedelightedtocontinuethejourneyinsuchpleasantcompany.
Mr.Foggrepliedthatthehonourwouldbehis;andthedetective—whowasdeterminednottolosesightofhim—beggedpermissiontoaccompanythemintheirwalkaboutSanFrancisco—arequestwhichMr.Foggreadilygranted.
TheysoonfoundthemselvesinMontgomeryStreet,whereagreatcrowdwascollected;theside-walks,street,horsecarrails,theshop-doors,thewindowsofthehouses,andeventheroofs,werefullofpeople.Menweregoingaboutcarryinglargeposters,andflagsandstreamerswerefloatinginthewind;whileloudcrieswereheardoneveryhand.
