Avastsheetofwater,thecommencementofalakeoranocean,spreadfarawaybeyondtherangeoftheeye,remindingmeforciblyofthatopenseawhichdrewfromXenophon’stenthousandGreeks,aftertheirlongretreat,thesimultaneouscry,"Thalatta!thalatta!"thesea!thesea!Thedeeplyindentedshorewaslinedwithabreadthoffineshiningsand,softlylappedbythewaves,andstrewnwiththesmallshellswhichhadbeeninhabitedbythefirstofcreatedbeings.Thewavesbrokeonthisshorewiththehollowechoingmurmurpeculiartovastinclosedspaces.Alightfoamflewoverthewavesbeforethebreathofamoderatebreeze,andsomeofthesprayfelluponmyface.Onthisslightlyincliningshore,aboutahundredfathomsfromthelimitofthewaves,camedownthefootofahugewallofvastcliffs,whichrosemajesticallytoanenormousheight.Someofthese,dividingthebeachwiththeirsharpspurs,formedcapesandpromontories,wornawaybytheceaselessactionofthesurf.Fartherontheeyediscernedtheirmassiveoutlinesharplydefinedagainstthehazydistanthorizon.
Itwasquiteanocean,withtheirregularshoresofearth,butdesertandfrightfullywildinappearance.
Ifmyeyeswereabletorangeafaroverthisgreatsea,itwasbecauseapeculiarlightbroughttovieweverydetailofit.
