Thevaultthatspannedthespaceabove,thesky,ifitcouldbecalledso,seemedcomposedofvastplainsofcloud,shiftingandvariablevapours,whichbytheircondensationmustatcertaintimesfallintorrentsofrain.Ishouldhavethoughtthatundersopowerfulapressureoftheatmospheretherecouldbenoevaporation;andyet,underalawunknowntome,therewerebroadtractsofvapoursuspendedintheair.Butthen‘theweatherwasfine.’Theplayoftheelectriclightproducedsingulareffectsupontheupperstrataofcloud.Deepshadowsreposedupontheirlowerwreaths;andoften,betweentwoseparatedfieldsofcloud,thereglideddownarayofunspeakablelustre.Butitwasnotsolarlight,andtherewasnoheat.Thegeneraleffectwassad,supremelymelancholy.Insteadoftheshiningfirmament,spangledwithitsinnumerablestars,shiningsinglyorinclusters,Ifeltthatallthesesubduedandshadedfightswereribbedinbyvastwallsofgranite,whichseemedtooverpowermewiththeirweight,andthatallthisspace,greatasitwas,wouldnotbeenoughforthemarchofthehumblestofsatellites.
ThenIrememberedthetheoryofanEnglishcaptain,wholikenedtheearthtoavasthollowsphere,intheinteriorofwhichtheairbecameluminousbecauseofthevastpressurethatweigheduponit;whiletwostars,PlutoandProserpine,rolledwithinuponthecircuitoftheirmysteriousorbits.
