Itmustbeconfessedthathithertothingshadnotgoneonsobadly,andthatIhadsmallreasontocomplain.Ifourdifficultiesbecamenoworse,wemighthopetoreachourend.Andtowhataheightofscientificgloryweshouldthenattain!IhadbecomequiteaLiedenbrockinmyreasonings;seriouslyIhad.Butwouldthisstateofthingslastinthestrangeplacewehadcometo?Perhapsitmight.
Forseveraldayssteeperinclines,someevenfrightfullyneartotheperpendicular,broughtusdeeperanddeeperintothemassoftheinterioroftheearth.Somedaysweadvancednearertothecentrebyaleagueandahalf,ornearlytwoleagues.Thesewereperilousdescents,inwhichtheskillandmarvellouscoolnessofHanswereinvaluabletous.ThatunimpassionedIcelanderdevotedhimselfwithincomprehensibledeliberation;and,thankstohim,wecrossedmanyadangerousspotwhichweshouldneverhaveclearedalone.
Buthishabitofsilencegaineduponhimdaybyday,andwasinfectingus.Externalobjectsproducedecidedeffectsuponthebrain.Amanshutupbetweenfourwallssoonlosesthepowertoassociatewordsandideastogether.Howmanyprisonersinsolitaryconfinementbecomeidiots,ifnotmad,forwantofexerciseforthethinkingfaculty!
Duringthefortnightfollowingourlastconversation,noincidentoccurredworthyofbeingrecorded.ButIhavegoodreasonforrememberingoneveryseriouseventwhichtookplaceatthistime,andofwhichIcouldscarcelynowforgetthesmallestdetails.
