Theweather—ifwemayusethatterm—willchangebeforelong.Theatmosphereischargedwithvapours,pervadedwiththeelectricitygeneratedbytheevaporationofsalinewaters.Thecloudsaresinkinglower,andassumeanolivehue.Theelectriclightcanscarcelypenetratethroughthedensecurtainwhichhasdroppedoverthetheatreonwhichthebattleoftheelementsisabouttobewaged.
Ifeelpeculiarsensations,likemanycreaturesonearthattheapproachofviolentatmosphericchanges.Theheavilyvolutedcumuluscloudslowergloomilyandthreateningly;theywearthatimplacablelookwhichIhavesometimesnoticedattheoutbreakofagreatstorm.Theairisheavy;theseaiscalm.
Inthedistancethecloudsresemblegreatbalesofcotton,piledupinpicturesquedisorder.Bydegreestheydilate,andgaininhugesizewhattheyloseinnumber.Suchistheirponderousweightthattheycannotrisefromthehorizon;but,obeyinganimpulsefromhighercurrents,theirdenseconsistencyslowlyyields.Thegloomuponthemdeepens;andtheysoonpresenttoourviewaponderousmassofalmostlevelsurface.Fromtimetotimeafleecytuftofmist,withyetsomegleaminglightleftuponit,dropsdownuponthedensefloorofgrey,andlosesitselfintheopaqueandimpenetrablemass.
Theatmosphereisevidentlychargedandsurchargedwithelectricity.Mywholebodyissaturated;myhairbristlesjustaswhenyoustanduponaninsulatedstoolundertheactionofanelectricalmachine.
