Snæfellis5,000feethigh.Itsdoubleconeformsthelimitofatrachyticbeltwhichstandsoutdistinctlyinthemountainsystemoftheisland.Fromourstartingpointwecouldseethetwopeaksboldlyprojectedagainstthedarkgreysky;Icouldseeanenormouscapofsnowcominglowdownuponthegiant’sbrow.
Wewalkedinsinglefile,headedbythehunter,whoascendedbynarrowtracks,wheretwocouldnothavegoneabreast.Therewasthereforenoroomforconversation.
AfterwehadpassedthebasalticwallofthefiordofStapiwepassedoveravegetablefibrouspeatbog,leftfromtheancientvegetationofthispeninsula.ThevastquantityofthisunworkedfuelwouldbesufficienttowarmthewholepopulationofIcelandforacentury;thisvastturbarymeasuredincertainravineshadinmanyplacesadepthofseventyfeet,andpresentedlayersofcarbonizedremainsofvegetationalternatingwiththinnerlayersoftufaceouspumice.
AsatruenephewoftheProfessorLiedenbrock,andinspiteofmydismalprospects,Icouldnothelpobservingwithinterestthemineralogicalcuriositieswhichlayaboutmeasinavastmuseum,andIconstructedformyselfacompletegeologicalaccountofIceland.
Thismostcuriousislandhasevidentlybeenprojectedfromthebottomoftheseaatacomparativelyrecentdate.Possibly,itmaystillbesubjecttogradualelevation.Ifthisisthecase,itsoriginmaywellbeattributedtosubterraneanfires.Therefore,inthiscase,thetheoryofSirHumphryDavy,Saknussemm’sdocument,andmyuncle’stheorieswouldallgooffinsmoke.Thishypothesisledmetoexaminewithmoreattentiontheappearanceofthesurface,andIsoonarrivedataconclusionastothenatureoftheforceswhichpresidedatitsbirth.
