           LittleDorritthoughtofthecompetitionthatwastobeenteredupon,andassentedverysoftly.

           ‘MrsMerdleisgoingtohaveagreatfarewellAssembly,dear,andadinnerbeforeit.Shehasbeenexpressingheranxietythatyoushouldreturnintime.Shehasinvitedbothyouandmetoherdinner.’

           ‘Sheis—ha—verykind.Whenistheday?’

           ‘Thedayafterto-morrow.’

           ‘Writeroundinthemorning,andsaythatIhavereturned,andshall—hum—bedelighted.’

           ‘MayIwalkwithyouupthestairstoyourroom,dear?’
