Fromoneofthemanysuchdefeatsofoneofmanyrent-days,MrPancks,havingfinishedhisday’scollection,repairedwithhisnote-bookunderhisarmtoMrsPlornish’scorner.MrPancks’sobjectwasnotprofessional,butsocial.Hehadhadatryingday,andwantedalittlebrightening.BythistimehewasonfriendlytermswiththePlornishfamily,havingoftenlookedinuponthematsimilarseasons,andbornehispartinrecollectionsofMissDorrit.
MrsPlornish’sshop-parlourhadbeendecoratedunderherowneye,andpresented,onthesidetowardstheshop,alittlefictioninwhichMrsPlornishunspeakablyrejoiced.Thispoeticalheighteningoftheparlourconsistedinthewallbeingpaintedtorepresenttheexteriorofathatchedcottage;theartisthavingintroduced(inaseffectiveamannerashefoundcompatiblewiththeirhighlydisproportionatedimensions)therealdoorandwindow.Themodestsunflowerandhollyhockweredepictedasflourishingwithgreatluxurianceonthisrusticdwelling,whileaquantityofdensesmokeissuingfromthechimneyindicatedgoodcheerwithin,andalso,perhaps,thatithadnotbeenlatelyswept.
