           Silentandretiring,hehadnouseforspeechwhenhecouldhearhisbrotherspeak;nodesiretobewaitedon,sothattheservantsdevotedthemselvestohisbrother.Theonlynoticeablechangeheoriginatedinhimself,wasanalterationinhismannertohisyoungerniece.Everydayitrefinedmoreandmoreintoamarkedrespect,veryrarelyshownbyagetoyouth,andstillmorerarelysusceptible,onewouldhavesaid,ofthefitnesswithwhichheinvestedit.OnthoseoccasionswhenMissFannydiddeclareonceforall,hewouldtakethenextopportunityofbaringhisgreyheadbeforehisyoungerniece,andofhelpinghertoalight,orhandinghertothecarriage,orshowingheranyotherattention,withtheprofoundestdeference.Yetitneverappearedmisplacedorforced,beingalwaysheartilysimple,spontaneous,andgenuine.Neitherwouldheeverconsent,evenathisbrother’srequest,tobehelpedtoanyplacebeforeher,ortotakeprecedenceofherinanything.Sojealouswasheofherbeingrespected,that,onthisveryjourneydownfromtheGreatSaintBernard,hetooksuddenandviolentumbrageatthefootman’sbeingremisstoholdherstirrup,thoughstandingnearwhenshedismounted;andunspeakablyastonishedthewholeretinuebychargingathimonahard-headedmule,ridinghimintoacorner,andthreateningtotramplehimtodeath.

           Theywereagoodlycompany,andtheInnkeepersallbutworshippedthem.Wherevertheywent,theirimportanceprecededtheminthepersonofthecourierridingbefore,toseethattheroomsofstatewereready.Hewastheheraldofthefamilyprocession.
