           Inthatstateofmindwhichrenderednobodyuneasy,histhoughtfulnesswouldhaveturnedprincipallyonthemanathisside.Hewouldhavethoughtofthemorningwhenhefirstsawhimrootingoutthestoneswithhisheel,andwouldhaveaskedhimself,‘Doeshejerkmeoutofthepathinthesamecareless,cruelway?’Hewouldhavethought,hadthisintroductiontohismotherbeenbroughtaboutbyhimbecauseheknewwhatshewouldsay,andthathecouldthusplacehispositionbeforearivalandloftilywarnhimoff,withouthimselfreposingawordofconfidenceinhim?Hewouldhavethought,eveniftherewerenosuchdesignasthat,hadhebroughthimtheretoplaywithhisrepressedemotions,andtormenthim?Thecurrentofthesemeditationswouldhavebeenstayedsometimesbyarushofshame,bearingaremonstrancetohimselffromhisownopennature,representingthattosheltersuchsuspicions,evenforthepassingmoment,wasnottoholdthehigh,unenviouscoursehehadresolvedtokeep.Atthosetimes,thestrivingwithinhimwouldhavebeenhardest;andlookingupandcatchingGowan’seyes,hewouldhavestartedasifhehaddonehimaninjury
