           Assheshruggedhershoulders,Clennamstifflybowedagain.Withanuneasyflushuponhisface,andhesitationinhismanner,hethensaidinastilllowertonethanhehadadoptedyet:

           ‘Everynerve,’repeatedMrsGowan,lookingathimincalmobstinacy,withhergreenfanbetweenherfaceandthefire.

           ‘TosecureMrHenryGowan?’

           Theladyplacidlyassented.

           ‘Nowthatissofar,’saidArthur,‘frombeingthecase,thatIknowMrMeaglestobeunhappyinthismatter;andtohaveinterposedallreasonableobstacleswiththehopeofputtinganendtoit.’

           MrsGowanshutuphergreatgreenfan,tappedhimonthearmwithit,andtappedhersmilinglips.‘Why,ofcourse,’saidshe.‘JustwhatImean.’

           Arthurwatchedherfaceforsomeexplanationofwhatshedidmean.

           ‘Areyoureallyserious,MrClennam?Don’tyousee?’

           Arthurdidnotsee;andsaidso.
